Adding Your First Item

Adding an item is the most common task you’ll perform in Space. We’ve made it quick and easy to do from anywhere in the app. This guide will walk you through the first part of the process: capturing the basic information.

1. Open the Action Menu

From any main screen, tap the floating action button in the corner (the one with Ritchie’s face on it). This will expand the menu to show several options.

2. Select “Add Item”

Tap the Add item icon (it looks like a plus sign) from the expanded menu. This will take you to the “Adding a new item” screen.

3. Fill Out the Basic Info

This first screen is for the essential details that uniquely identify your item.

  • Item name: Give your item a clear and descriptive name. For example, instead of “Laptop,” try “15-inch Dell XPS Laptop.”
  • Assign to Team: Every item belongs to a team. Select the team responsible for this item from the dropdown menu. This determines who can manage it and what custom fields are available.
  • Add a Picture: A picture is required and is the best way to identify an item quickly. You can either:
    • Tap Take Photo to use your device’s camera.
    • Tap Choose from Gallery to upload an existing picture.
  • Find Location: Select the physical location where the item is currently stored. You can search for a location by typing its name.

Ritchie’s Tip: Good photos make a world of difference! Try to take a clear, well-lit picture of the item against a simple background.

4. Proceed to Add Details

Once you’ve filled out all the required fields, the button at the bottom will become active.

Click Next: Add Details to move on to the next step, where you’ll add more specific information like a description, tags, and custom attributes. You can learn more about that in our next guide, Adding Details: Attributes & Tags.
